Aware of Awareness
Awareness is a multifaceted concept that shapes our perception of the world and ourselves. It is the foundation upon which we build our understanding of reality and plays a crucial role in personal growth and development. Awareness can be described as the state or ability to perceive, feel, or be conscious of events, objects, thoughts, emotions, or sensory and mental patterns. Awareness extends beyond mere perception. It encompasses various dimensions, from the sensory awareness of our environment to the deep introspection of our thoughts and emotions. It includes recognizing the interconnectedness of our mind and body and understanding how our mental states influence our physical well-being and vice versa. Awareness covers a spectrum from basic sensory awareness to deep introspection and self-awareness, and our awareness influences how we interact with our surroundings and understand our experiences.
On our trip to Emerald City last month, we climbed the ladder of musical awareness en route to “Mindful Music Making.” This month, let’s delve into the diverse facets of awareness as we traverse the Yellow Brick Road to find the freedom and flow of mindful living. Uncovering how our levels of awareness interconnect and influence each other broadens our understanding of our human experiences. With heightened awareness, we develop an intricate understanding of our inner and outer world and cultivate a more harmonious, balanced, and fulfilling life. When fully aware, you’re in Emerald City, where living and performing at your most relaxed happens as easily as clicking your heels.
Raising Awareness
Raising awareness is a journey that often involves overcoming challenges and facing uncomfortable truths. Increased awareness has practical benefits in various areas of life. A greater awareness enhances leadership skills and improves team dynamics. In relationships, it can lead to better communication and deeper connections. For musicians, heightened awareness can transform their approach to practice and performance, enabling them to tap into their inner creativity and express their true selves through their art.
For instance, a musician might initially focus on technical skills, but as they become more aware, they understand performance’s emotional and psychological aspects. This deeper awareness can lead to more authentic and expressive music. We can achieve greater awareness and fulfillment by embracing the journey and being open to learning and growth.
Avenues of Awareness
Each step on The Yellow Brick Road to Emerald City is a path to understanding a different part of awareness, leading to a greater understanding of how the whole human being works. Here are some ways we are aware.
Self-awareness, a critical aspect of awareness, allows us to understand our emotions, motivations, and the impact of our actions on others.
Sensory awareness allows us to engage with the world through our senses, experiencing the vivid tapestry of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations.
Emotional awareness helps us navigate the complex landscape of our feelings and the feelings of others, fostering empathy and emotional intelligence.
Cognitive awareness sharpens our ability to reflect on our thoughts and beliefs, cultivating a deeper understanding of our mental processes.
Physical awareness tunes us into bodily sensations and movements, promoting health and well-being.
Mind-body awareness bridges the gap between our mental and physical states. It involves recognizing the physiological manifestations of our emotions, understanding how our thoughts impact our physical health, and tuning into the subtle signals our body sends us.
Spiritual awareness connects us to a sense of purpose and the greater universe, offering a deeper meaning to our existence.
Social awareness enhances our interactions, allowing us to understand social dynamics and cultural contexts.
Enertigic awareness helps us understand the flow. Nikola Tesla is known for saying, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.” The energies in our body profoundly impact our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
These avenues of awareness make up the Yellow Brick Road to Emerald City and understanding our human existence. As we explore the avenues deeply, our ability to realize our full potential is realized.
Layers of Awareness
Peeling back the layers of awareness is a continuous and rewarding journey. As we raise our levels of awareness, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. This heightened awareness can lead to personal growth, improved relationships, and greater fulfillment in all areas of life. Take this journey, and you’ll discover the transformative power of awareness.
Imagine awareness as an onion, with each layer representing a different level of consciousness. The outermost layers include surface-level awareness, sensory perception, and routine actions. As we peel back these layers, we delve into more profound levels of awareness, including emotional intelligence, empathy, and introspection. These deeper layers help us understand what we are doing, why we are doing it, and how it affects us and those around us. It is okay to cry on this journey. Onions always make me cry, too.
Basic Awareness
The immediate recognition of sensory inputs, such as noticing a bright light, hearing a sudden sound, or feeling a temperature change, is the raw, unprocessed data that our senses pick up from the environment, which makes up our basic awareness.
Basic awareness refers to the most fundamental level of consciousness where an individual is simply awake and responsive to their immediate environment. At this level, awareness is primarily about the automatic and instinctive recognition of stimuli without deep analysis or reflection.
Emotional and Intellectual Awareness
Next, we move past the feeling of hot and cold to how we feel about being hot and cold. Here, we start to identify what we feel and why. Recognizing and understanding our emotions allows us to begin managing our emotional responses, recognizing triggers, and understanding the impact of our emotions on our behavior and interactions. Our emotional awareness grows with our ability for self-reflection and allows us to understand our underlying motivations for our actions and desires.
Intellectual awareness involves engaging the intellect and being aware of our thoughts, beliefs, and mental processes. It involves critical thinking, self-reflection, and questioning and analyzing our thoughts. Intellectual awareness helps us understand the patterns in our thinking and how they influence our perception of reality.
Environmental and Social Awareness
Here, we broaden our awareness to include the larger environment and the interconnectedness of all living beings. This level involves understanding our environmental impact, recognizing the importance of sustainability, and appreciating the natural world. It fosters a sense of responsibility and stewardship.
Our new-found Intellectual awareness allows us to extend our awareness to others. We become more attuned to the feelings, needs, and perspectives of those around us. Social awareness includes empathy, active listening, and understanding social dynamics. It is essential for building meaningful relationships and effective communication.
Mind-Body, Subconscious, and Spiritual Awareness
At this level, we delve into the subconscious mind, exploring the deeper layers of our psyche. This includes uncovering hidden fears, desires, and motivations. Subconscious awareness involves techniques like introspection, dream analysis, and deep meditation to reveal the underlying factors that drive our behavior.
Spiritual awareness involves connecting with something greater than ourselves, whether it’s a higher power, the universe, or the collective consciousness. This level encourages us to explore our purpose, values, and the meaning of life.
Universal Awareness
At the penultimate level, we achieve a sense of unity with all existence. Universal awareness transcends individual consciousness and embraces the interconnectedness of all beings. It is characterized by a deep sense of compassion, love, and understanding for all life forms.
The final level represents full awareness or enlightenment. Here, we are completely awake to our inner strength and potential. We profoundly understand ourselves, our environment, and our place in the universe. This level is marked by inner peace, clarity, and the ability to live harmoniously with ourselves and others.
Energetic Awareness
Our journey of awareness is never-ending, not a one-time ascent but a continuous process of growth and transformation. Einstein believed that everything in the universe, including our bodies, is made up of energy. He also understood that energy and matter are interchangeable, as described by his famous equation E=mc². Einstein theorized that disruptions in the energy patterns within the body cause illness and disease.
The Chakras are subtle energies that move along our spine. They help our organs, minds, and intellect work at their best. By integrating chakra awareness, you can achieve greater balance, deeper understanding, and a richer connection to yourself and the world around you, bringing you closer to your true self.
Root
Imagine yourself seated in a quiet space, feeling the ground beneath you. You begin to focus on your breath, and as you do, you become aware of a subtle energy at the base of your spine. This is the Root Chakra, glowing with a deep red light. It connects you to the earth, grounding you and giving you stability and a sense of security. You feel safe, present, and at peace with your surroundings.
Sacral
As you breathe in, your awareness rises to your lower abdomen, where the Sacral Chakra, a vibrant orange, begins to spin. This is the center of your creativity and emotions. You feel joy, passion, and the freedom to express yourself fully. Your senses come alive, and you embrace the flow of energy, enjoying the pleasure of being alive.
Solar Plexus
The energy ascends to your upper abdomen, where the Solar Plexus Chakra radiates a brilliant yellow. Here lies your personal power and confidence. You feel a warm strength in your core, a sense of purpose, and the will to take on challenges. You are empowered and ready to take decisive action in your life.
Heart
Next, your focus shifts to the center of your chest, where the Heart Chakra glows with a soothing green light. You feel an overwhelming sense of love and compassion, not just for others but also for yourself. Forgiveness comes naturally, and you are open to giving and receiving love. Your heart feels light, open, and free.
Throat
As your awareness rises to your throat, a serene blue light of the Throat Chakra begins to shine. You feel the urge to speak your truth, to communicate openly and honestly. Words flow effortlessly, and you express yourself with clarity and authenticity. There is a sense of liberation in speaking from the heart.
Third Eye
Your attention now moves to the space between your eyebrows, where the Third Eye Chakra, illuminated by indigo, opens your inner vision. You see beyond the physical world, tapping into your intuition and wisdom. Your thoughts are clear, and you trust your insights, knowing that your inner guidance is leading you true.
Crown
Finally, the energy reaches the top of your head, where the Crown Chakra glows with a soft violet or white light. Here, you feel a deep connection to the universe, to something greater than yourself. A sense of oneness and peace envelops you as you understand you are part of a vast, interconnected whole. You are at peace, in harmony with the cosmos.
Grateful Awareness
You sit for a moment, basking in the balance and alignment of your chakras. Each one, from Root to Crown, is a vital part of your being, helping you navigate the world with groundedness, creativity, confidence, love, truth, insight, and spiritual connection. Be grateful for your newfound awareness as you rise from meditation, feeling balanced, centered, and ready to carry this awareness into your everyday life.
Neurological Awareness
Next, our awareness extends into the fascinating realm of neurobiology and the interconnectedness of our bodily functions. Each level brings us closer to understanding our true nature and the immense power within us. By developing deeper awareness, we can better navigate life’s challenges, harness our inner strength, and achieve our fullest potential. The three organs send neural signals and play crucial roles in our physiological functions.
The brain, the nervous system’s central command center, processes sensory information, thoughts, and emotions and coordinates bodily functions.
The heart, often called the “heart-brain,” has its complex nervous system, the cardiac plexus. The heart communicates with the brain and other organs through hormones, neurotransmitters, and electromagnetic signals.
The gut, or belly brain, is the enteric nervous system that controls the gastrointestinal system and is sometimes called the “second brain.” It can operate independently of the brain and influence emotions and mood through the gut-brain axis.
At the heart of our journey lies the understanding of our physical and emotional selves. Our heart beats tirelessly, our gut reacts instinctively, and our brain processes the world around us. These organs, each sending crucial neural signals, are the machinery through which our subconscious and conscious minds interact.
Follow The Yellow Brick Road
In the timeless tale of The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy sets out on a journey along the Yellow Brick Road, seeking the magical Emerald City. This path, adorned with golden bricks, becomes a metaphor for our quest for understanding and mastery of the inner workings of our human selves. It is the path to understanding our true selves and the way home.
Dorothy stands at the beginning of the Yellow Brick Road, unsure of what lay ahead. With her companions, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, by her side, she embarked on a journey to Emerald City. Each sought something they believed they lacked, but their adventure would reveal more than they anticipated.
The Light of the Mind
Our journey begins with the Scarecrow, who yearns for a brain. This quest symbolizes our pursuit of intellectual awareness, corresponding to the light and clarity of the mind’s energy. At first, our awareness is surface-level, limited to basic sensory perceptions and immediate surroundings. Like the Scarecrow, we may doubt our ability to think deeply and critically. However, as we peel back the layers, we discover that intellectual awareness involves more than just knowledge. It encompasses understanding our motivations, engaging in self-reflection, and developing critical thinking skills.
As the Scarecrow finds his confidence, we, too, begin to trust our intellectual capabilities. We learn to question, analyze, and understand the world more profoundly. This deeper intellectual awareness becomes a solid foundation for our journey, guiding us through the complexities of life with the clarity of light.
The Air of Love
Next, we meet the Tin Man, who longs for a heart. His quest for emotional awareness mirrors our need to understand and connect with our feelings with the heart and the pure air of love. The Tin Man’s desire for a heart represents our journey towards emotional awareness. Key aspects of this layer include recognizing and understanding our emotions, developing empathy, and enhancing our emotional intelligence.
Initially, our emotional awareness might be limited to recognizing simple emotions. But as we journey further, we explore the depths of our emotional landscape. The Tin Man teaches us the importance of empathy, emotional intelligence, and genuine connection. We learn to recognize and understand our emotions, not just as fleeting feelings but as vital signals that guide our actions and interactions. This emotional awareness enriches our relationships and helps us navigate the complexities of our inner world with compassion and understanding.
The Fire of Your Sun
Last, we encounter the Cowardly Lion on the yellow brick road, seeking courage. His journey represents our quest to harness willpower, trust our gut instincts, and overcome our fears. Corresponding to the will, the fiery energy of the Sun resides in your gut. The Lion’s search for courage symbolizes the willpower and gut instinct needed to confront our fears and make bold decisions. Fear and doubt often hold us back at the beginning of our journey. We might struggle to make bold decisions or trust our inner voice. As we peel back the layers of awareness, we uncover our courage.
Courage is essential for pushing through the challenges we encounter on our journey. Trusting our gut instincts and having the willpower to act on them complements our intellectual and emotional awareness. The lesson the Lion teaches is that courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to move forward despite it. By embracing our fears and trusting our instincts, we develop the willpower to face challenges head-on. This newfound courage empowers us to make decisions that align with our true selves, leading us further along the path of self-realization fueled by the fiery determination of the Sun.
Integrating Mind, Heart, and Will
Dorothy represents the integration of mind, heart, and courage on this journey. Her steadfastness and growth symbolize the integration of mind, heart, and will. She learns that the qualities she sought in her companions were within her all along.
Throughout her adventures, she learns she already possesses the qualities she seeks. This realization is akin to reaching a higher level of awareness, where we understand that everything we need is already within us. This realization is the ultimate layer of awareness, and we achieve a holistic awareness that enriches our lives by integrating the mind, heart, and will.
Ultimate Awareness
In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy and her friends discover that the answers they sought were already within themselves. In our journey of self-discovery, we realize that the mastery of our inner selves, or the subconscious master of the human machine, resides within us all along. Through introspection and understanding, we unlock the potential to be our best selves.
Dorothy’s adventure showed her that the brain, heart, and gut were not isolated entities but parts of a harmonious whole. The Scarecrow’s intelligence, the Tin Man’s empathy, and the Lion’s bravery were all facets of a unified self. As she looked at her friends, Dorothy knew that the journey to self-awareness was the true path to Emerald City, where the wisdom of the brain, the love of the heart, and the courage of the gut come together in perfect harmony.
Harnessing Awareness
Several practices can help us peel back the layers of awareness. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, can help us stay present and attuned to our thoughts and feelings. Journaling is another effective tool, allowing us to reflect on our experiences and gain insights into our patterns and behaviors. Engaging in meaningful conversations and seeking feedback from others can also provide valuable perspectives and help us grow. You might find out you’re not as weird as you think.
Just as Dorothy and her companions used their emotions, minds, and courage to navigate Oz, we, too, harness these elements to navigate our inner landscapes. Emotions color our experiences, shaping our perceptions and decisions. Our mind, the seat of rationality and creativity, guides us through challenges and opportunities. Courage, the bravery to face fears and uncertainties, propels us forward on our journey towards self-mastery.
Emerald City Awareness
As we reflect on Dorothy’s journey along the Yellow Brick Road, we are reminded that our quest for inner mastery is not about seeking external validation or perfection but about embracing the richness of our emotions, the clarity of our minds, and the strength of our courage. The Emerald City symbolizes the realization that we already possess everything we need to thrive and excel.
Ultimately, like Dorothy clicking her heels to return home, our journey of self-awareness and mastery leads us back to ourselves. To the profound understanding that the greatest treasures lie within. Walk your Yellow Brick Road with curiosity and courage, knowing that your Emerald City of inner mastery awaits within the power of your awareness.
